Painting Daemonettes 1.0

So I am on the ferry from Wellington to Picton (New Zealand) for another week away from my 'children' so I thought I would write up a very quick guide to how I am painting my daemonettes. I wont go into too much detail about technique, except to say that generally that I do a lot of blending with thinned paint off a wet palette. I also use washes and glazes but to a far lesser extent. I prefer to reserve dry brushing for weathering and when I am being lazy with my blends. That said, blending is still not one of my stronger points, but I figure that like anything, if I stick to it I will eventually get the hang of it.
This is only a very rough guide to the colours I use when painting my Daemonettes. I do enjoy adding extra subtle tones that happen to be on my palette at the time. Currently I have a box of ten 'mostly' painted. This week I have put more hours than is probably sane into the corsets and flesh tones.

I was frustrated with the strong contrast between the greenish skin tones and the magenta corsets (Here). I have solved this by using foul green mixed into my magenta highlights. This has also been mitigated with the use of alien purple in the shadows of both the corsets and the skin tone.

For the most part I have the claws to an acceptable standard, but these will require more time towards the end of the process to bring them into unison with the rest of the paint job.

The hair ties the models in with the rest of the army. The one colour that I will use on all of the models: Squid pink, highlighted with a flesh tone (sorry I forget which one) with magenta in the shadows.

Most of the colours below will be used in all units to some degree. The main difference between the daemons and the C:SM is that with the daemons one of the dominate colours is the use of desaturated foul green (Game Color), while the C:SM have blue violet (Model Colour)

In retrospect I realise that some of the processes are overkill. Such as the use of what I call 'Under base coats'. Perhaps an undercoat of Army Painter Skeleton Bone Primer would have saved a lot of time with little (if any) difference noticeable in the final product.

I use a variety of products. These include: Army Painter (AP); Vallejo Game Color (GC) & Model Colour (MC), as well as Game Workshop Paints (GW).

(I will update this post with pics in a week or so when I get back home and perhaps after I have done a little more work on them. Unfortunately there is no internet access where I am going)

Slaanesh Furies?

This is the first of the Slaanesh Furies that I am working on, using OOP Daemonette models with Tyranid Gargoyle wings. These will most likely be painted in the same (or very similar) colours as my Daemonettes.

Now just to kick my fear of greenstuff :S

DAEMONETTES

...what sweet music they make

Further Progress

I decided to give some of my close combat Noise Marines scenic bases to increase the sense of movement. I have also been working on my blending and experiementing with zenithal lighting. Hopefully I will actually finish these one day, but irrespective they are a lot of fun to paint.

Note: the colours look very bland in the photos. It is hard to tell here but the bases have subtle tones of purple and pink. Eventually when I get to weathering the C:SMs I hope that the bases and the models work in harmony with each other.

Kakophoni

It seems that our prayers have finally been answered. I think I still like the GW sonic weapons better, but it will be nice to mix them up a bit. The heads in particuler are great. I am going to have to get serious about green stuff before I purchase any of these as I think that the sonic weapons need the screaming faces of the front, plus they could do with some chaos iconography to update them to 40k.

Dark Elves Coming October

It is rumoured that Dark Elves will be getting a major update next month. I a quite excited to hear that GW will be releasing lots of new plastic kits.

But how is this relevant to one who collects a WH40k Slaanesh army you may ask?

There are two main reasons:

When I first got back into the hobby I had not decided if I wanted to collect fantasy or 40k models, but I did know that my devotion was to Slaanesh. At the time I was seriously considering starting a Dark Elf Pleasure Cult. But I was put off by the lack of supporting rules and that the Dark Elf models weren't all that great. The only models I really wanted to paint where the Cold One Knights, but these wouldn't have fit with the army's theme. Then Dark Vengeance came out and I started getting all excited about Chaos Space Marines allied with Slaanesh daemons. So with this re release, we may yet see the return of pleasure cults.

Now the second reason I am excited is because I am always on the lookout for models to convert into Chaos Cultists.  The current witch elf models look very dated, but they are possibly the closest thing available for the vision I have in mind for Slaanesh cultists. So I am really looking forward to seeing the new models in the hope there will be something that I can use.

Noise Marines

As I am not a huge fan of the current Chaos Space Marine models, I have decided that I will use the Chosen models from the Dark Vengeance set as Noise Marines. I don't plan to field Chosen so these models would have otherwise gone to waste. This is how they are looking so far:

For my close combat squad/s I am using a wide variety of parts, mostly from the possessed and Raptors kits. I am almost done painting my first batch so I will post a picture within the next few days. You can see the silouette of my standard bearer in the background

1,000 pt Emperors Children Warband

I am working on a couple of lists at the moment but this is my 1,000 point Chaos Space Marine list

HQ:
Lucius

Elites:
Helbrute

Troops:
Noise Marine close combat squad x6 (Rhino)
Noise Marine sonic weapon squad x6 (Rhino)
Slaanesh Cultists x20

Fast Attack:
Spawn x2

Heavy:
Maulerfiend

The idea is that the list mixes more expendable units to draw fire or to hold objectives, with some very hard hitting units.

I am also considering what I will use a spawn. The current models are okay but I was already considering Reaper's Mastema demon as 'count-as' Fiends. So I am thinking that in the meantime I will use them as Chaos Spawn. I will probably modify it slightly adding a long tongue like on the Seekers of Slaanesh models and maybe some tentacles coming out of its back. Mostly I just think that it is a beautiful model that will fit right into any Slaanesh themed army. Add some wings and it could even work as a daemon Prince

Terrain Project: First Building Complete

I just completed my first ruin for my children’s playground. I am very happy with how the bullet holes turned out in particular. I could not find a descent tutorial on how to paint them so I just ended up using a photo reference. I am currently working on a much larger and more detailed building that I am really looking foward to applying the same painting techniques to.

troubleshooting help

I am the first to admit that I am not particularly tech savvy. I am wondering if anyone knows how to remove the text/link that is covering top photo. I have no idea where it came from or how to remove it

INQ28mm, Cultists, Rumours and Wishlisting

There are a few rumours circulating the internet that GW may be intending on releasing a 28mm Inquisitor skirmish game. However, no details have arisen on what this game may actually look like or even anything solid that it exists at all (some say GW will release Bloodbowl instead). This would be a very smart move on the part of GW giving them an inroad into the already very substantial skirmish wargaming market.

I love Necromunda (I used to play Delaque back in the late 90s) and have wished for some sort of marriage between it with the Inquisitor game at 28mm scale. One possibility that neither game explored was cults. Imagine an inquisitor and his retinue facing off against Chaos cultists or even a Genestealer cult. Now this approach could also fill some pretty serious gaps in WH40k while creating a lot of diversity within the skirmish game itself. Cultists have become a major feature in a lot of 40k lists for their ability to hold objectives and for their use as meat shields. And yet they are seriously underrepresented in terms of models. In order to field them you a forced to purchase the Dark Vengeance box set (x20 Cultists) and then if you want more you have to purchase a few Chaos Cultist box sets (x5 cultists each). But if you are like me, you want cultists that better fit your army's theme of which the current models don't work so well. I have long searched the internet in vain for ideas on what I could use as alternative to the standard cultist models. Possibly the closest would be to give Daemonettes guns but I think that would blaspheme against Slaanesh (if such a thing is even possible). So here's hoping that in the not too distant future we will see some more inspiring cultist models being released by GW.

I should also mention that there are also rumours that the Gods of Chaos will be getting the supplement treatment, with a possibility of Cult Terminators and even new greater daemons in the works.

Noise Marine

I just discovered this. I have no idea who created it but it is a great representation of a Noise Marine, particularly in the use of colours, I am tempted to try a similar effect on my models.

Gj 504b

"If we could travel to this giant planet, we would see a world still glowing from the heat of its formation with a color reminiscent of a dark cherry blossom, a dull magenta," study researcher Michael McElwain, of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement from the space agency. - See more at: http://www.space.com/22265-small-alien-planet-direct-photo.html#sthash.J2InIthU.dpuf

Finally some progress...

Ahhh blogger has been a pain to use thus far. For some reason the insert image button doesn't work for me so I have had to go back to html. Not a real issue but I am lazy and for some reason had not thought of it. I have made some progress painting. Here is the daemonette model I have been working on to test the colour scheme for my daemon allies. I am pretty happy with it to say the least. The colours seem to work really well and it is my best work to date (with the unfortunate coincidence of making the rest of my pieces look relatively Meh).

I am still not decided on the final colour scheme for my Emperor's Children, except to say that is will involve a lot of purple

Noise Marines with Daemon Allies

The following is a rough mock up of the 2,000 point Slaanesh army I am working on. I still need to flesh out some of the finer details and I am still not too familiar with Codex: Chaos Daemons.

As much as possible I have taken Gift of Mutation as it is a Chaos list afterall and I really like the random element that goes with pleging oneself body and soul to the Chaos gods. This has also been reflected in my kit bashing models together from different kits, including possessed and mutation sprues.

HQ

Chaos Lord: Mark of Slaanesh
Daemon Prince: Daemon of Slaanesh

Troops

Noise Marine Close combat squad (x9NM) + Rhino transport

Noise Marine Sonic Weapon squad (x6)

Noise Marine Sonic Weapon squad (x6)

Chaos Cultists (x10, maybe 20+ if I intend to use them to hold objects or as meat shields)

Heavy Support

Vindicator

Daemon Allies

HQ

Herald of Slaanesh

Troops

Daemonettes (x18)

Daemonetes (x10)

Elites

Fiends (x3)

Fast Attack

Seekers (x6)

Heavy Support

Soul Grinder: Daemon of Slaanesh; Warp Sword

Now I need to work on smaller lists (1,000 and 1,500 points) which will be a lot harder as I need to be far more selective as opposed to 2,000 points where I can juggle the list to take the majority of the units that I am (and want to) work on.

Pic of the Week

As part of this blog I will not only share my own work but also the work of those who inspire me to ever greater heights of perfection and perversion in the service of Chaos.

New to 40k?

The following information is taken from wh40k.lexicamum.com is is presented to provide a general introduction to those who are not familiar with the 40k universe. I do not claim to be the author of the following text nor do I own the intellectual property rights on any of the following images.

What is Warhammer 40,000?

“Warhammer 40,000 (informally known as Warhammer 40K or just 40K) is a Gothic science fantasy tabletop miniature wargame, produced by British gaming company Games Workshop. Play centers around 28mm scale (approximately 1:65) miniature figurines produced by Citadel Miniatures, which represent soldiers, creatures, and vehicles of war. The game requires a combination of tactics and luck.

Warhammer 40K is the science fiction companion to Warhammer Fantasy. Warhammer 40,000 allows for less regimental, formation-based movement, and deals with more advanced weaponry. The game is currently in its 6th edition.” more

Who/What is Slaanesh?

“Slaanesh is the Chaos God of lust, greed, excess, pain, pleasure, perfection and hedonism. Slaanesh was the last of the major Chaos Gods to be born - coming into existence with the collapse of the Eldar civilisation.” more

What is Chaos?

“Chaos is the psychic energy that composes Warp space. More generally, "Chaos" refers to anything related to Chaos, including its influence, the Gods of Chaos, their followers, and the Warp. Chaos is almost synonymous with the Warp - the two concepts are inseparable: Chaos is the limitless ocean of spiritual and emotional energy that defines the Warp. It is a great and raw force of change and power, and is both physically and spiritually corrupting. The most gifted mortals, psykers, can utilise this energy, thus making them capable of abilities which transcend the laws of the material universe. However, the malevolent power of Chaos can gradually corrupt a psyker, tainting his mind and body.
The iconic symbol of Chaos is the eight-pointed star, representing the infinite possibilities of Chaos.”

“There are four great Powers of Chaos. Each are given form and fed by the emotions manifested by sentient beings in the material universe.
The Chaos Powers and the emotions that gave rise to them:

  • Khorne is born of hate and rage.
  • Nurgle is born of despair and fear of death.[2]
  • Slaanesh is born of lust and hedonism.
  • Tzeentch is born of ambition, hope, and the desire for change.”

Who are the Emperor’s Children?

“The Emperor's Children - Chaos Space Marines, once amongst the Emperor's most loyal servants they turned traitor during the Horus Heresy. Most of their remaining members are little more than hedonistic psychopaths who often wield unique sonic weaponry in battle.” more

Introduction

Welcome to the Throne of Excess. Here I will document my progress painting and constructing my Slaanesh warband: The Children of Excess for Warhammer 40,000.

My vision is to field an all Slaanesh army comprised of daemons and C:SM. As much as possible I will use Slaanesh specific units and characters, and where this is not possible I will theme units accordingly.

I have only recently got back into the hobby after giving it up a few years ago. My main interest in the hobby is in modeling and painting rather than in playing the actual game, so rules and army composition are a secondary concern for me.
